What to Write in an Anniversary Card: 35+ Ideas for Every Style

By the Lumière team ·

Sweet, funny, short, long distance or decades married: 35 example lines to borrow, and a simple three-part formula for writing your own.

Most people don't get stuck on the gift. They get stuck on the card. You sit down with a pen, the card is open in front of you, and suddenly every sentence sounds either too much or not enough.

The good news is that an anniversary message doesn't need to be clever. It needs to sound like you, and it needs to show that you've noticed something real about the two of you. This guide gives you a simple way to write one, then 35 example lines grouped by style so you can borrow, mix and adapt.

A simple formula that always works

If you only remember one thing, remember this: a memory, a truth and a promise.

  1. A memory. Start with one specific moment. Not "all our great times", but the night the car broke down on the way to Lorne, or the first time they cooked for you and set off the smoke alarm.
  2. A truth. Say one thing you genuinely love about them, in plain words. "You make ordinary Tuesdays feel like something."
  3. A promise. End with something you'll do, big or small. "More road trips. Fewer arguments about the aircon."

Three or four sentences built this way will beat any poem you copied from the internet, because nobody else could have written them. If your memory needs a nudge, a few of our questions about your memories together can bring back moments worth writing about.

Before you write

  • Use the details only you know. Inside jokes, nicknames, the café you always go back to. Specific beats general every time.
  • Write it in your own voice. If you never say "my darling" out loud, don't start in the card.
  • Draft it first. Write it on your phone or a scrap of paper before you commit ink to the card.
  • Keep it legible. It sounds obvious, but a rushed message is hard to read and harder to keep.

Sweet anniversary messages

These work for most couples, whether it's your first anniversary or your fifteenth. Swap in your own details wherever you can.

  • "Another year of you. I'd choose it again, every single time."
  • "I still get excited when I hear your key in the door."
  • "Thank you for making home feel like a person, not a place."
  • "You're my favourite part of every day, even the boring ones. Especially the boring ones."
  • "A year ago I hoped this would last. Now I know it will."
  • "Of all the things we've built together, the way you look at me is still my favourite."
  • "Happy anniversary to the person who knows exactly how I take my coffee and loves me anyway."
  • "Every year with you is better than the one before. I can't wait to see what this one brings."

Funny anniversary messages

Humour works well if it's how you usually talk to each other. The trick is to land one sincere line at the end, so it doesn't read like you're dodging the feelings.

  • "Happy anniversary. Thanks for not leaving when you saw how I load the dishwasher."
  • "Another year of you stealing the blanket. I've decided it's a sign of love."
  • "I love you more than I love the last slice of pizza, and you know what a big deal that is."
  • "Congratulations on putting up with me for another year. You deserve a medal. I got you a card."
  • "We've officially been together long enough to argue about which way the toilet roll goes. That's real love."
  • "You're the only person I'd share my chips with. Don't let it go to your head. Love you."
  • "Here's to another year of you laughing at my jokes, even the bad ones. Mostly the bad ones."

Short anniversary messages

Sometimes the card is small, or you'd rather say the long version out loud. A short line can still feel personal.

  • "Still you. Always you."
  • "Best decision I ever made."
  • "Here's to us, and to many more."
  • "My favourite adventure is you."
  • "One year down, forever to go."
  • "Home is wherever you are."
  • "Thank you for every day of this year."

Long distance anniversary messages

If you're apart on your anniversary, the card has to do a bit more work. Mention the distance honestly, then point towards the next time you'll be together.

  • "The kilometres between us have never felt longer than our love. Counting down to the next airport hug."
  • "Happy anniversary from the other side of the country. Save me a spot on the couch."
  • "I miss you in every time zone. Not long now."
  • "We've spent more time on video calls than most couples spend in the same room, and I'd still choose you."
  • "This year proved we can do hard things. Next year, let's do them in the same city."
  • "Every night when I say goodnight to the screen, I'm saying it to you. Happy anniversary."

If distance is a big part of your story, our guide to long distance relationship ideas has plenty of ways to feel close while you're apart.

Messages for married couples

After a wedding, anniversary messages often shift from excitement to gratitude. That's a good thing. Steady love deserves to be named.

  • "Marrying you was the easiest decision I've ever made. Everything since has proved it right."
  • "Thank you for being my partner in the big things and the bin nights."
  • "Years in, and you're still the first person I want to tell everything to."
  • "We've had good years and hard years, and I'm grateful I got to have all of them with you."
  • "I loved you on our wedding day. I love you more now, and I understand you better."
  • "Here's to the life we've built and the one we're still building."
  • "Thank you for growing with me instead of away from me."

Milestone anniversary messages

Big round numbers (5, 10, 25 years) are a chance to look back. Mention how far you've come.

  • "Ten years ago we had no idea what we were doing. We still don't, but we're doing it together."
  • "Twenty-five years, three houses, two dogs and one very questionable caravan holiday. I'd do every bit again."
  • "Five years in and you still surprise me. I hope that never stops."

How to make any of these your own

Borrowed lines are a good starting point, but the best messages are adapted. Here's how to turn a template into something personal.

  • Add a specific memory. "Best decision I ever made" becomes "Saying yes to that terrible first date at the Thai place on Sydney Road was the best decision I ever made."
  • Add a future plan. End with something you're actually going to do together: a trip, a dinner, a weekend with no phones.
  • Use their name or nickname. It makes the message feel addressed to one person, because it is.
  • Read it out loud. If it sounds like something you'd never say, change the words until it does.

When a card isn't enough room

Some anniversaries call for more than a few lines. If you find yourself writing past the edge of the card, that's a sign you're ready for a proper letter. Our guide to love letter ideas walks you through the structure, and the free love letter generator can give you a first draft to edit.

You can also pair your words with your memories. A Lumière card is a physical card with a small NFC chip inside: when your partner taps it with their phone, it opens a page with your letter, your photos, your song and a live count of the days you've been together. It's a way to give the long version of the message without squeezing it into a margin. Have a look at more anniversary gift ideas if you're still deciding on the gift itself.

A few things to avoid

  • Comparing them to exes, even jokingly. It rarely lands the way you meant.
  • Turning it into a to-do list. "I love you, and please remember the car rego" can wait for a text.
  • Over-promising. "I'll never be late again" is sweet but unlikely. Promise something you'll actually do.
  • Copying a famous quote without adding anything. If you use a quote, follow it with a line of your own about why it fits you two.

The short version

If you're writing at the kitchen bench five minutes before dinner, here's all you need: one memory, one thing you love about them, one promise. Write it in your own words, keep it honest, and sign it the way you always do. That's the message they'll keep.
